August is the lull. Everyone is saving their big swings for the autumn, which means the calendar looks thin — and that is exactly why it is the best month of the year to actually play something to the end instead of adding it to the pile.
Three worth your attention.
Beast of Reincarnation — 3 August
This is the interesting one. It is Game Freak — yes, the Pokémon studio — making something that looks nothing like Pokémon.
A sci-fi fantasy action RPG set in a cursed post-apocalyptic Japan. You play Emma, a warrior, with a dog named Koo alongside you. Out on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X.
I am always interested when a studio that could comfortably print money forever decides to make something else instead. Those projects are either fascinating or a mess, and both are more fun than another safe sequel.
Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 — 27 August
The second box set, landing on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, Switch and PC — which is close to everything.
If you missed these the first time, this is the least painful way in. If you did play them, you already know whether you are buying it. You are.
Big Walk — August
House House, the studio behind Untitled Goose Game, is back with a co-op game about walking and talking across a large open world.
That description sounds like nothing. So did “you are a goose and everyone hates you”. This is a studio that has earned the benefit of the doubt on premises that sound thin on paper.
Also landing
Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail gets its Switch 2 port on 4 August, alongside the base-building shooter Once Human. Lies of P: Complete Edition arrives digitally on Switch 2 this month, with a physical release following in October.
Use the gap. From September onward you will not get another one until next summer, and the backlog does not shrink on its own.
